I saw this one...looks a bit suspect, The seller is offering a V5 and the headstock from the Ariel in question (states the frame was damaged). I thought the frame number was at the rear of the top tube not on the headstock?? or did the move it on the later models ?

Anyway, to my mind the suggestion is (although I accept this is not stated in the advert) that you could use the logbook / reg number / frame number on another frame i.e you can alter another frames identity to match this V5. That is known as 'ringing' and in short it is illegal. The reg number only relates to the frame it was issued to and if that frame is written off then the reg number is written off as well.

The reg number is stated as being' non transferable', this means that the original reg number which relates to this V5's frame number has been cherished transferred to another vehicle and DVLA have issued this Ariel with a new reg number which is non transferable

He also has a logbook for a '57 Triumph 650 up for sale...same deal frame written off selling you the logbook and headstock.

The headstock might have a part number on it.

The two registrations he has listed both show new headstocks which I guess people will use to build a trail bike around to they can join the pre-65 club.

If you mess about long enough with bikes or cars you will eventually end up with a v5 for something that no longer exists (parts bike, damaged frame) but selling on eBay seems a little illegal to me.

I have reported this listing to eBay twice, but it still hasn't been removed. The frame number on a swinging arm bike is not on the headstock, and the part pictured is clearly new, so in my mind, this is utterly illegal.

See this post regarding informing DVLA of such things: http://forum.arielownersmcc.com/viewt ... lit=marker

I also reported the two items discussed to Ebay but as Rob says nothing seems to have been done.

I know no one on here would be devious enough to do something like this but with the full registration JFO 351 and the number off the V5 on eBay the vehicle could be recorded as scraped......

I never thought of doing that :o

As I said before, to do this legally the V5 and reg number are of no use without the original frame (or a NEW frame to same spec from the manufacturer.... which obviously you cannot get) and at least 2 original major components i.e engine, gearbox, wheels (both), forks.
see this link https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration ... t-vehicles

Now there is no way of telling if the forks / wheels (and maybe gearbox) are definitely original to the reg number so as long as they are the correct year you may be OK.

BUT with a classic bike you still need the original frame NOT just a bit of it with a frame number on it.

So...the only way that the V5 on sale is of any use is if you use it to change the identity (frame number) of the same model and same(ish) year bike to match this V5. And why would you do this...unless the bike you have was stolen?
