Simes,

I have heard that kind of thing before about speedo faces. Curious really, as I routinely clean PA faces and odometer dials with T-Cut and don't have problems as a result. I have probably averaged a PA speedo a month treated in this way for the past 20 years or so. I can only conclude that PA speedo dials are made of stronger stuff that Chronometric ones.

No Simes, I haven't tied T-Cut on a chronometric face. I don't repair chronometric speedos, because lots of other people do, the bits are small and I don't have a stock of them, etc.

hi again chaps, I am aware my frame no shows under contract no C10477
and the WD serial C4589426-C4590925,
allocation C1038302-C1039801, how do I decipher this pse
26/04/41..1500 to Chilwell
24/01/42...1500 to Ashchurch,
some went to RAF some R.N
is there anyway with this information the bike's original posting could be narrowed down at all?
kind regards

I am given to understand that the bikes would be shipped to depots and from there assigned to units.
Chilwell was one such depot. After that it's pretty much a blank ....

I have heard that there are "keycards" about, which may capture some information on vehicles, and also some vehicles may have remained in service (post war) and get picked up there too.

Some machines do have traces of their unit designation still painted on them (pretty rare), can be identified on period photographs (even rarer) or have the period brass plate, which may cover a service activity.

The contract no covers the "order" of bikes (i.e. hundreds or thousands on that one order)
The census allocation C1038302-C1039801identifies the bike in the sequence - there will be as many of these numbers as frame numbers in the contract, i.e. one per bike and should be issued sequentially. For example a bike with a frame number 1000 into the sequence should get a allocation number also 1000 into the sequence.
Of course, there is no way to verify this 100%. Bikes could get pulled off production and sent back and get a later number or mutliple production lines feed one allocation process etc ... I imagine things would vary over time too.

thanks for that John, the serial no's only actually show 1499 in number so there must have been another contract number or another 1499/1500 WD serial no's, if you see what I mean? kind regards
