WD handlebar stuff ?

Post by Vincent.vanGinneke »

I have bought a few bits that I think are WD.
The are pretty rough made and have some traces of blue paint ! RAF ? nice for Burney!
It's all brass exept the lower clamps with 'AMAL' on it.

Can anyone identify them as being WD and would this be from a W/NG? is there a difference between handlebar fittings from a M20 , G3L , 16H etc?

Found that they look very much like Norton 16H pre war : http://www.wdnorton.nl/Military_detail_ ... ns_16H.htm
Hmmm, I dont fancy trying to find the rest of a 16H, so these will make a nice swap for something more useful to me.

That's a good site. We should think about getting some material together for our W/NG site.

Just had a reply from someone in the know, it's more likely to be from a G3L.
Bowden not Amal

WO / G3L Matchless use Bowden & amal Bowden may be the more common. The 2 in one( magneto and valvelift) are unique to ARIEL. The valvelifter you have there is the same as the G3L is fitted with. Levers are bronze with some steel parts in the assembly, occasionally. Nev

Thanks Nev, I'll see if I can persuade a G3L owner to swop them for Ariel parts :D

That's interesting re the valve lifter. With WD bikes there appears to be a trend to standardising parts as time went on. A "universal" common seat was used also. Some WD Matchless ran Miller electrics.Nev

Reg. this drawing; Looks like the levers for brake and clutch are the same.
You can see the slit for the wire on top in the right hand lever, making it a clutch lever.
If drawing is correct they used clutch levers for left and right.
