The book "British scramblers" by Don Morley has a factory picture of Harold Lines in 1951 on a Ansty spring framed VCH, the factory insisted he should try it, normaly Harold and the other factory riders had a MacCandless swinging arm on theire VCH.

So that would make 5 differend rear ends to VCH in 5 years and if John is right about a WNG framed VCH than 6.

I've heard back from Mick Holmes, owner of the Matchless engined W/NG:

"The Matchless W/NG does indeed have an XG frame(XG 15685/15690), as did the BSA engine one. The two were basically production machines sent to the other factories for modification by them".

If the War had continued for very much longer all W/NGs might have been powered with something different than the 350 OHV, BH
engines as the WD was looking for ways to universalize components. :o

The W/NG production numbers at around 40,000 was only one third of the BSA M20 numbers. the War dept seemed to be trying to get weight off the bikes, without much success. the Matchless and Ariel seemed to be the most favoured by the riders as far as I can determine. Nev

Naturally, as these two marques were more sporty. Gotta have some fun even during a war

This is the prototype W/NG - Matchless with a four speed reverse gearing.
The War Department tested this model in late 1940 but mass production was not to be as the Dunkirk retreat had already happened.
They decided that the only way was four speeds ahead.
