The floating cam bush (4130-32) protrudes past the inside of the brake plate by .059". Should the brake cam washer (4118-29) fit around the protruding part of the cam bush? The cam bush O.D. is .617". That would make the I.D. of the 4118-29 washer .618" or more. Correct? What is the O.D. of the washer?
I assume that the thickness of the washer takes up the depth of the protruding cam bush, making it flush with the end of the protruding tube. The cam bush tube protrudes .059", making the washer thickness at least .059". Correct?
Draganfly is out of stock so I'll have to make a washer, but want to get it right.
I've finally found time to strip out the brake plate I have. it's pretty much as you describe it
with the spigot of the brake cam holder projecting through the brake backplate. However,
on mine, the washer doesn't sit over the projecting spigot, it sits on it, keeping the cam
and the shoes away from the 'plate. The washer's ID is the OD of the cam and its OD is
the same as the fixed washer on the end of the cam, as is its thickness.
Will and Vincent, thanks very much! Pictures really are the best when explaining how things go together. Really good pictures both of you. I did find myself staring at the grease fitting wondering where the heck did that come from? Good idea.
Those special shouldered nuts that go through the cam bush are a rarity. If anyone knows where there is a stash please say so. I have one set but need 3 sets.
From Draganfly catalogue: "In early 1941 the brake drum material was changed to cast iron from sheet steel and early in 1942 the steel brake shoes were substituted for the light alloy ones, so that more Spitfires could be produced".
Thanks for that. I have one wheel with steel drum and alloy shoes but It didn't look Ariel. It has the speedo drive, same drum diameter small tapered roller bearings & axle dia 1/2", but the backplate is different also to the mini qualcast type brake assy. Fits the "different" W/NG forks. Nev
