I have found a Ariel and looking for the age date frame J1180 engine J1006 can anyone help

It's a 250cc from 1931.

Thanks for that do the engine and frame belong together? Can we tell the date it was built? Is it worth a total restoration it looks like I have all the parts

We can safely say they belong togetter, there aren't many about, if you want the exact date you have to write to the club for a dating form.
Ariel started with 100 so July 1931 would be a good estimate.

The restored value is about 4000 pounds but it is a hobby to keep you out of the pub, if you weigh more than 90 kilo than better buy a 500 .

A rusty first paint willbe more interesting.

Agreed.
It's only original once!

Personally, I find mechanically sound but cosmetically tatty original bikes infinitely more interesting than yet another dazzling "restoration" with Over The Top modern chrome and stainless, 2 pack paints etc.
Of course, it's your bike and you must do as you choose - but I'm just suggesting that you think long and hard before destroying its originality.

Why not build it then ride it for a while before you decide what to do,although it would be a shame to lose its originality but it is your bike and your choice .

Hi Andy,
I bought the bike pretty much site unseen except for a few photographs. The more I see of the parts the more I think the best thing to do is not to touch the paint and get the bike up and running. It looks like parts are going to be very hard to find.When it gets delivered I will take some photographs of all the boxes and bits and pieces.
