Re: handlebars

Post by Mike Gott »

When I was restoring mine I needed handlebars and was directed to club member Jurgen Anderson in Denmark who had some original factory spares ones still in the Ariel wrappings and I bought a pair off him. Is he still around? If he is, an email may be worthwhile.

I had never heard of a 7/8" handlebar for W/NG before, I thought they were all the tapered ones 6400-40 (slightly higher than civvy ones). But low and behold there in the September 1945 parts book is 6401-44 a 7/8 handlebar and 6403-44 plate, handlebar to clamp. Draganfly make their own handlebars, in house on a mandril bender, sorry that's a monkey, I meant mandrel bender. I am sure they would be happy to make up some 6401-44 'bars in stainless or bare steel. They have tried but failed to make the tapered type.

So we have tapered with a screw for rubber mounted early ones Tapered without screw for later clamped types and the 7/8" with centre sleeve 1" OD, from what date?.
I have a friend here in Australia who has made handle bars, sand bent exhaust pipes and mufflers for years professionally and unplated or plated would be a good price. He makes all my stuff. I wouldn't go anywhere else. With the exchange rate it would be definitely a good idea price wise. Nev

Would't know the exact date but probably somewhere late '41 early '42 ?
Before I knew that the tjechs make the best clamping rubbers (in thread of Marco's iron SQ4)
I made this :

handlebar grip (2).JPG
handlebar grip (1).JPG
It does clamp, but I dont know yet if it holds up in use..

With W/NG parts it is not the date so much as the contract that specifies what is and isn't fitted. Some late contracts had the steel primary cases but then later on they went back to aluminium.
Contract C 7,372 delivered between 28/5/40 and 6/6/40 is listed with 6400-39 'bars
The next contract C 8,302 delivered 25/6/40 to 7/10/40 has 6400-40 'bars
It is not until contract S 4,554 delivered 31/12/43 to 7/9/44 that 6400-44 'bars are listed but 6400-40 are also listed for this contract.
The next contract S 4,670 12/1/44 to 6/4/44 lists 6400-44
All subsequent contract list the 6400-44

6400-39 are tapered with standard rise
6400-40 are tapered with 2 1/4" rise instead of 3/4"
6400-44 are 7/8 with 6403-44 plate
Note I do not have full details of all contracts

My W/NG has been dated as late 41, and has the higher tapered bars with pin to stop the bars rotating, mounted in rubber. It only stops them going one way and when tied down in the van has turned around 1/2 turn and gone loose so I don't tie to the bars at all now for that reason. Making them in sections is possible, but "my Man" doesn't want them to be welded. One piece seems a little more difficult to do well..Nev

Talked to Peter Long from Cornucopia today as he knows his way in reproland.
He can have them made, minimum order is 20/25 pieces and he needs a original to copy.
Price? at a guess about 70 Euro the piece, but that is a guess...
This would mean a initial layout 1400,- +
I am not going in to this, but feel free to contact him.
