Re: Wng parts
Timing cover I thought this was a steel one but I had another look and it's a aluminium made one.

Re: Wng parts
That's odd because the idea of the steel covers was to repalce the alloy ones. Can't imagine it was a one off so there must be a story here somewhere.

Re: Wng parts
I thought that myself. I always thought it was steel but I never really took a good look at it as it was not needed. But I drug it out yesterday and to my shock it was aluminum made. It's thicker than the tin ones also.

Re: Wng parts
pressing a sheet of alloy into that shape might save a few ounces ?
and quicker to make ? (once you have the die)

Re: Wng parts
The early wng had aluminium cover they look just like normal one but without the letters stamped in them. The later steel ones are like the shape mine is. Maybe I'm just guessing here! That they changed the shape them changed the aluminum to steel making the aluminium in this shape shorted lived. It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense here. I maybe wrong in my guess about but I think it fits.

I don't know what your saying here but, it willbe for saving aluminium and machining time.Leejm wrote: That they changed the shape them changed the aluminum to steel making the aluminium in this shape shorted lived.

Re: Wng parts
I'm saying I have only seen steel ones that look like this one. The aluminium ones look like any other one but without letters. So they has to be a reason why this looks like it does and is made of what it is. They stamped the steel covers that is why they are flat! Aluminium you have to cast. The cover shows casting marks!! But looks like the ones that were stamped! Stamping in steel saves time not going back to cast them in aluminium. And make new molds to make it look this a stamped steel one. That would be just plain nuts!

Re: Wng parts
You could stamp sheet aluminium. It was done with the monobloc magdyno's (Lucas) in the 20's. (drive gear cover) I doubt it would keep sealed for long as the edges would easily bend, with the timing cover situation. The stamped steel one looks a bit different in shape. Nev
