My bike has been converted to 12v but I am still using the 6v Altette. It is nice and loud but I am worried about its longevity. I plan to put a resistor in series to take the strain off it but, to calculate the right right resistance and power dissipation, I need to know the normal current flow when used in a 6v system.
Does anybody know how many Amps a 6v Altette horn usually draws?

I have been using a big, heavy russian 6v horn (came with my 1960 Ural) on it's modified 12v system for 7 (?) years ?
It only gets used occasionally and seems unaffected.
The lucas altette horn document gives the resistance of the internal coil:

As far as the current draw of a Lucas horn, I have never put a meter on one , but it would be the highest current draw of anything on the bike. ( more than everything else put together) I would estimate. Generally if the battery is not good they will not work well, Think they would take 12 volts, but it might up the pitch. Run a good earth across you steering head bearings as the horn button earths on the handlebars. Nev
