Headlamp shells for '56-'59 models

Post by dick.warne »

Anyone know the dimensions of the correct shell that fits inside the Cowl on late models? The ones on my bikes are butchered versions of the type used up to '56, but without the hole for the switch panel. Anyone got any ideas for a suitable replacement, or source of supply? I've seen a flatback one for a Trident at autojumbles that looks as if it will fit, but it's in chrome, which is a waste stuck out of sight!

The parts list , on the AOMCC members site lists Part No 51818B, which I think corresponds to Type SS700P.

What I am not smart enough to know is the difference between the ones with switches in and your type (where the switch is on the yoke)

Well Dick, I have one in the shed, it's off my 58 . I pulled it out when I realised that I would have to alter (butcher) it to get my indicators to fit in. I had an old one with the switch holes so I cut 1 inch off the back of it all round. I then cut a circle of leather bigger then the area cut off and stuck it on. I put a hole in it to let the loom through.

Hi Dick
The 1956-57 cowl headlight was the same shape as the earlier 'bucket', although without the switch panel but with a couple of holes to allow the speedo cable to pass through, there was also a rubber tube with end fittings that was fitted between the two holes to stop cable chaff. This is an awful headlight because of the difficulty in fitting the speedo cable and the inabilty to rotate the headlight to get at the rim/reflector release screw. The 1957-59 version was a flatter bucket (as in photo from Steve Carter) and the speedo cable passed behind it, a much better set up but difficult to find.
