...could someone please talk me through the process of putting a photo in the blank space that currently exists in the profile area when I make a post, cheers

When you create a post.
Below are two tabs "Options" and "upload attachment"
Go to the "upload attachment" and browse for your picture and then "add the file"
You have the option to add it inline (embedded with the text)

You can always preview your post using "preview" (between the "save draft" and "submit" buttons)

This board uses BBcode and over on the right (when you are creating a post) it's listed as "BBCode is ON" The BBcode is a link which takes you to the guide.

Thanks for that John, but the wording of my query meant I lead you in the wrong direction with your reply so I'll try again.

In the lefthand box beside your posts you have a nice image of some classical graffiti, some have a bike related pic while others created theirs after a hard night out, I won't mention any names,(Dave B)...this is the image I would like to add, cheers B.

ohhh.. that's an AVATAR.

Top left corner of the forum page it says "user control panel". It only appears when you are logged in.
You can include all manner of personal details etc (including these "signatures" that some of us have ; which appear everytime we post).
If you go into "profile" and then "add avatar", you will be able to upload one.
Note there is a pixel limit size, so you may have to resize your image with desktop image software first.

Thanks John,now we're on the same page as they say...and I've found out what an avatar is at long last, one of many mysterious IT words, the function of which remain a mystery to me...B

Any idea how to make an Avatar using Windows Live Photogallery ?

I do not have that software.

However, I assume it has the ability to resize a photo ?
I have limited the avatars, on this forum to 100 pixels by 100 pixels. So, you should just be able to resize to those dimensions and then upload it.

It works great.

I have tried to add an avatar. I resized the picture to 100 x 100 pixels but the system refused to accept it saying "file bigger than 6KiB. I reduced the size to try to get it within that limit but the result was a smudge. Any ideas?
