Re: Which pistons are available for my ariel
I've seen many cylinders break off (various makes) . Some are not even suitable for sleeving but the 500 Ariel has enough meat with the factory supplied sleeve, The 350 OHV is a little weaker than the 500 but can be through bolted, though you don't see many examples of it being done. It's a bit of a safety issue. Nev

I bought a Yamaha XT350 piston 86mm bore and machined the barrel to suit and had it ceramic coated.
I have done the same in the past but don't advice it to others now becouse there is no end to this.
I guess the end comes when you end up with a load of cast iron or alloy rings on the floor.
I wonder what the maximum diameter is? I do have one C.I. cylinder bored to 85mm

Re: Which pistons are available for my ariel
Guys
Has anyone come up with a good substitute for 350cc pistons? Some Triumph 750cc and Norton 750cc twin pistons are 73mm, has anyone tried these? I expect someone has tried something in the past.
Cheers Walter

I think there are still plenty of NOS aftermarket and originals around. Don't go too big in the bore on the 350 barrell. Also the comp height is a bit more than a lot of others. Nev

Re: Which pistons are available for my ariel
Hi peoples; - thought I'd resurrect the time honoured "cast vs forged piston" debate with the opening inquiries; -
1/ Please can anyone source a set of (std) C.R. 7.2:1 forged pistons for a Mk1 '49?
&
2/ Opinions regarding use of GPM or JP pistons, please.
Cheers all,
Bebbspoke

I think you'll find all JP pistons are cast.

Has anyone personal experience of running an omega piston.. What is the preferred clearance for fast road work with an all iron engine.

There is only one good way to know; put it in the oven at 200 degree celcius and than mesure it that's the bore size becouse it will never be 200 during running.
You will find out it stops groing after 150.

Dave
I have recently fitted an Omega piston to my 1955 HS.... Skirt clearance 0.003" and am very happy with it...I have detuned the motor back to standard VH.

Greg, looks nice and new, how does it perform..is the std clearance sufficient to prevent seizure
