"W" is the serial number prefix for a '28 model.brett.hayhurst wrote:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ARIEL-VINTAGE ... 2ec862a572

Re: ARIEL VINTAGE ENGINE 500CC ? 1920`S ? FLAT TANKER PRE RE
Hi All,
I am restoring a 1927 Model A; the engine is very similar to the 28.
I notice from the photos, that on the LH (primary drive) crank case half there is a stud screwed into a small boss directly above the crank shaft (at 12 O clock). It appears to be 1/4" BSW (?). It is the upper mounting point for the primary chain guard.
I have two crank case pairs, and for each one there is also a lower mounting hole (at 6 O-clock) for the earlier crank case (V6230), but absent from the later one (V13100). For both crank cases, the aluminum bosses have a 5/16" BSW thread. The threads are flogged out for each upper mounts. I am going to repair the threads. However, should there be a stud installed in each hole, as per the pic of the ebay engine, or should it be 5/16" BSW female thread in each boss?
Why does the later 1927 engine only have one (upper) boss?
I have included pics of the bike as received; (with wrong wheels!).

I don't understand all, but you want the left crankcase with male studs in it, don't know what the richt half with one stud is.
I think it's a B model.
Best to use wire tire rims, Ariel used both.

Hi Richard,
I may not have all the right mounts on my primary cover, and have the open cover E8/214. On my bike, there is no top mount to the crankcase, and the top lug just has a bolt to plug the hole. The bottom primary cover mount bolts to the frame, not the motor.
Also, the bottom crankcase lug on this motor is not drilled, which makes sense if it is removed later in the series.
The motor photographed is around v5000
The top lug is stripped, but the bottom looks ok. In this, 26 by 1/4 tap tightens after a turn or so. A 28 tpi is better.
On later, early 30's motors, I'm pretty sure there are studs in these holes. There are for my '34, which has a tin primary cover, similar to the enclosed '27 cover, E8/182
Nice bike. Well, it will be!
Every ride I've been on has been awesome. I expect yours will be the same.
I'm off to a black Ariel rally in August and mechanicals willing, will get to meet John Deeth as well as riding with other bikes. Can't wait.
