Briefly, the kick-start has started to rest against the back of my leg when riding, so I assume an internal bracket/stop has broken/dropped off.
Before I take the gearbox cover off, any warnings or hints/advice please
Also while off, I’m going to examine the worm drive for the Speedo as despite new cable and overhauled Speedo the needle just occasionally rattles around, again any hints /warnings would be great.

Taking the outer cover off is pretty straightforward. The gear change part may come with it and have to be re indexed but it is marked. You can then check the skew drive gears for the speedo. If you are lucky the end of the cable will just be a bit short, but often the gears are stuffed. They are very hard steel and crack up . Nev

You were right, despite trying to not pull the gear change out, it pulled off with the cover.
The drive coming through the box to drive the Speedo cable worm is damaged (see photo) as is the worm drive (you were right again)

Thanks for your input, enjoyed reading your blog, very useful.
on taking the cover off the first thing to dribble out was some water before the oil/grease mix, I realised why when I saw the hole where the kick start stop should have been (no damage), no sign of the bolt, but found the rubber made from an oil pipe and the squashed outer ring, see photos.

Did your new kickstart stop peg, work ok I.E. no loud clanks etc when releasing the kickstart, or damage to the mechanism not having a buffer to hit rather than solid metal.
I have to make a choice of doing something similar to you or buying a box (allegedly working fine) I have been offered for £100.00
Is this the going price for a box ?
