'39 Sq4 exhaust conundrum

Post by RayBlack »

Can anyone please explain why the finned exhaust clamps do not fit between the exhaust outlet stub on the manifold and the cylinder head on my '39 4G Sq4? As far as I can tell, all parts are correct for the bike ie., the manifolds came with the (disassembled) project bike and the clamps appear to be the correct part number. As per the attached photo, it can be seen that approximately 5/16 inch would have to be removed from the fins on the head side of the clamp for it to slide into place...

Just popped into the garage to take a few photos of mine. Mine is a 1947 iron head 1000c but those clamps don`t have full sized fins all the way round. I cant figure out how to post photos. I will send you a PM.

It is one of those undocumented features, you have to trim some fins, this is correct and original!

Thanks Colin and Roger. I thought that might be the case, but wanted to make sure I hadn't made an obvious error. I did an extensive internet search, but do you think I could find a clear front-on photo of an iron head Sq4 on the internet?

I do not use any of the 'social media' sites, but thanks for the offer. The photos you posted are already very helpful.
