KH 500 Camshaft shims

Could any one please advise where the camshaft shims should be fitted?
I have just rebuilt the engine and shimmed the camshafts within the crankcases on the timing side.
Both camshafts required a 5 thou and a 15 thou shim inserted between the thrust face of the camshaft and the inside face of the camshaft bush in the timing side crankcase. This gave me 2 thou end float on each camshaft. The sprockets and sprocket nuts were not fitted at this point.
When I tightened the camshaft sprocket nuts, with timing chain fitted, I found that the crankshaft became very difficult to rotate. This is due to the camshaft sprockets pinching on the case/bush behind.
When I dismantled the engine a 4 thou shim was fitted to one camshaft an 8 thou shim fitted to the other.
Should I have fitted the shims behind the camshaft sprocket?

I would refer you to page 10 of the 1948 owner's guide, in case you don't have a copy the relevent bit is...

Roger, Thanks for the advice and reference in the owners guide.
The engine is back together and seems to be running OK.
