Any clue?
I’am busy with overhauling a 1940 VG engine and found a ‘G’ stamped between the pusrod holes. Does someone have a clue?

Re: Any clue?
Hi Paul, I have a similar mark but an R which I hoped was for “racing” but it’s not very likely. I expect it’s just a factory inspection mark unless anyone has another suggestion?

Yes, so that an engine could be identified as being a standard F, deluxe G or a Hunter H or touring or sports side valve (A or B) after it was built but before it was fitted into a bike. The procedure when building a bike, as far as I gather was to pick up the next tab (order sheet) grab a frame from a large pile and the relevant engine from another pile and assemble. The numbers may have been written on the tab or perhaps only in the despatch book which would be after testing and correcting any faults.

Phelon and Moore's engines were stamped with the identification mark of the builder - my Panther 650 mill was built by Jack Wilkinson. Totally unrelated to this thread but how many folk have a picture of the chap that put their engine together? Jack is second from left - a reassuringly experienced looking fellow.

Hi Steve.
My M120 is W 3010, meaning Jack built mine too
Cheers,
Bevan

Guess he'd be amazed to think it is out and about today 18,000 km from where he built it !
