Petrol Tank Ariel F 1930

Post by Christian Bergbaur »

Hello,
I'm restoring an Ariel F 1930. The lining on the Petroltank is gold and blue. What is the original color code for the blue. Can anyone help me. I would be very grateful.

Best regards
Christian

There are not any colour codes for any Ariel colours, various equivalent car colours have been suggested for most colours over the years but I have never seen any suggestions for the blue used in 1930. I would suggest a general mid-blue, it would in any case have varied a little over the years at the factory.

If you are lucky enough to have some original paint that would be a good way to go. Could you share the results on the forum so that the information is available until the end of time?

How about looking on the underside of the tank where its fading over the years will be less that the top more exposed areas.

Use a RAL card, or Pantone book to match the colour.

Take the tank to your nearest automotive paint supplier.

They will have colour cards with 10,00 shades of blue.

Choose your shade, tell Roger, paint your tank and please send us pictures.

In this article I pointed out the lines that we managed to get in the original Ariel tanks 1927 - 30. There are also photos and some dimensions 8-)

Excellent article with lots of useful information. Restorers should remember that the lines and transfers were put on by hand and to be correct they should not be too precise. I have an original tank where the position of one line varies by 1" from left side to right side. Chrome was available from 1930 after the factory installed a new chrome plating plant, they went a bit mad with chroming everything. There were many bikes sent out with a chrome tank other than the model G, I often wonder how customers realized that they could ask for something like that. These variations were never listed, well a few were but most of the non-standard parts were not. It is probably because people knew they could do it, it was standard practise and virtually all bikes were built to order.

As an example, my Model A had a chrome tank from new:

There's chrome under the handlebar clamps too. I think you have the details on the machine register Roger.
cheers
