Hi , I am getting some great advice,thanks. Do I have to split the crankcase to check the sludge traps? Is there an easier way? Thanks.

I'm afraid so. If you don't know when it was last done, it's highly recommended to crack in there and clean them out. They are 3/16" bore and fill up easily - and when they do, the associated big end will seize and it's goodbye crankcase.
