Wanted: Rear Aluminium Brake Plate for 5-Stud 8" Rear Wheel

Post by Sean.O'Brien »

Dear all,

I am seaching for an aluminium rear week brake plate for wheel type Type 14 Combined sprocket and brake drum, 8”, swinging arm frame, 1954-55.

I beleive it is part number S4467-51, the S meaning swinging arm.

Any help, very much appreciated.

Hi Pete,
I think the brake plate in the photo is to be used in a plunger frame and not in a swingarem frame. The brakeplate for the swingarm frame uses a bolt instead of a slot to fix for the brakeanchor. Sean, am I right in thinking?
Regards Klaus

I picked up two alloy rear brake plates (devoid of all fittings) at an auto jumble for £10 each. I think they are for the swing arm frames.
I'm not at home at present but I'll put some pictures up sometime after 5th August.
Hopefully they are what you're after.

Thanks Peter, they are similar, but Klaus is correct, that is for a plunger frame. An alternative is to obtain a plunger one and modify it.

Bob, if you could look when you get back, that would be brilliant thank you

Sean,
I'm back home now - this is what I have; Two brake plates for a swing-arm Ariel (though Roger will probably tell us that the casting numbers are for a BSA !).
They are a perfect match for the MkI Lester Grant TLS brake so I think they are what you are after.
Let me know if you are interested and I'll stick one in the post to you.

These brake plates for the full width hubs were the same for BSA and Ariel, there were many differences in other parts such as the brake arms and cable lugs. Sean is looking for a brake plate for the 1954-55 5 stud 8" QD rather than the 1956-58 7" 4 stud. Type 14 rather than type 15. Just noticed that type 14 is incorrectly listed as for rigid machines on the Draganfly site.

So, no use then. I should have read the initial request more carefully !

Ah well, nice try.

Thanks for ooking Bob.

I have since managed to find the plunger version and I'm now off to borrow the only swinging arm brake plate I know of, to see if the plunger version can be made in to the swinging arm version. Otheriwse I'll have to get new ones cast...

All postive though....
