VH 500 Crank Case how to open

Post by ralfpenkert »

Sorry for that question,
need to open the crank case to change the conrod bearing.
This nut, look at the image; doesn't move a hair.
What shall i do?
Open flame? Already warmed it up with no result.
Btw it will open anti clockwise does it?
Second question: is draganfly the only source to get this bearing? Expensive!
Appreciate any advise - Ralf

It should be a left-hand thread so try turning it the other way.
If you haven't over-tightened it that is!

As a club member you should have access to the document repository
in the members only section of the club website. In there is a soft copy
of Waller, the 'workshop manual' for all Ariels.

Ralf

For the bearing it might be worth getting in touch with these guys directly, they had some when I enquired a month or two ago.

Left hand thread on the timing pinion. Quote your engine year and number. Your motor has cast flywheels and a tapered pin I think. That's actually a bit easier to replace.. You may also need the Hardened sleeve in the conrod. That's just a pressin but has to be the right interference fit and be honed /lapped after fitting. Align flywheels carefully. I don't like to use the centres as they may be damaged and make the assembly appear truer than it really is. Nev

LH thread.
After you got the nut off do not try to prise the half time gear with a screwdriver or something similar.
Doing that will most of the time result in breaking the small rim on the timing case.
Heat it and hope it pops off (not likely after your RH journey) or make a puller like this :

I got it, thank you all.
Me stupid, can't separate left from right thread.
Nev, Engine no is MB236, at least the frame is made 56.
Nice puller you have, Vincent

Should have tapered crankpin then but I don't think it's like the earlier ones. Always check oil flow is not impeded BEFORE you have the motor back together. Nev

I don't know what it's like 'down under' :o but up here in the northern half these use parallel crankpins (if my '51 and '56 flywheels are anything to go by)....

The later VH's went back to cast iron flywheels .A bit different to the earlier ones in the VG (good OL BSA) as far as I know in even the later VCH's which were often replaced with the earlier steel ones out of necessity, especially when raced. 51 is before the change and had steel wheels. Nev
