How Do You Get To Your Nuts?

Post by tony.barnett »

A question to White and Poppers - removing a barrel I've always had to take the valves and springs off first to get to the base flange nuts. Definitely makes removing and replacing a barrel a more time consuming process that it needs to. So, my question - has any of you figured out how to get to the nuts behind the tappets on a W&P engine without removing the valves and springs?

Pics of my 1920 barrel and the offending stud/tappet layout.

A pic of my 1913 barrel to illustrate the poor access...

Hi

The clearances are not well defined in the photos, but my first approach would be with the ring end of a combination spanner suitably ground down and thinned to fit, as well as moving the push rods to maximise access.

Regards Mick

Thanks Mick - I've tried grinding down a ring spanner - there just isn't enough room, and if you do get the spanner over the nut the tappet is in the way.

Hi Tony

Have you considered using modifying the nuts, (reducing head size and or height)?

Regards Mick

Thats not a bad idea. I'll see if I can find reduced hex nuts in that size.

How about manufacturing double nuts? Full size nut at the base with a smaller hex nut for your ring spanner on top? Wouldn't compromise the clamping diameter of the lower nut?
