You will get something to do and a few challenges as well.. I used to make myself not popular by saying "3 More cylinders than you need " I hope you find what you seek. Nev

I got to agree with you Nev,three too many and 3 times the cost of single rebuild. At least. Great bikes though when sorted.

I actually did a little exercise on this last year, and estimated the restoration costs of doing an Ariel. Some stuff was finger in the air as I always do my own paint work but other stuff is firm, like the cost of pistons etc.

I found *estimated:

A single will cost around £7100 to restore
A twin will cost around £7400 to restore
A square will cost around £8300 to restore

So actually not a big jump from single to four. A lot of the expensive bits are things like wheels, tyres, paint and chrome, which costs the same regardless as to the amount of cylinders you have!

I think one of the big issues is getting things like Cases and major engine bits. They are the rarest model as they cost a lot more when new. If you start with a roughy you have to search harder for the different bits Nev

OK, if you know what to look for, but you'd have to be very familiar with that model as a well as generally with a SQ four.. Nev

I know what you mean about finding one in boxes. This is how mine came.

A proper SQ4 engine restoration wil cost you serious money. By no means one can compare this to to a single engine rebuilt. 4 new conronds for a SQ will set you back at least 600… let alone 6 extra valves, guides. 3 Extra pistons etc etc. compared to a single. Rebuilding the cycleparts wil make no difference, but the engine does.
