Re: Top end troubles
Simon,
That inlet valve looks to me as if it's being held off its seat.
I wouldn't expect to see anywhere near as much soot and lacquer on the
underside of the valve head or the valve stem.

I'm sorry - my mistake, that's the exhaust valve.will_curry wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 9:57 pm Simon,

Post text now corrected! That's what two beers and a huge plate of curry does for you...
cheers

Simon,
That makes more sense.
I've got to ask: what sort of curry?

Re: Top end troubles
What can we do about a loose cylinder head guide bore folks? My inlet is a little loose in the W/NG (iron head obviously). Do I need to make an oversized guide or are they available?
cheers

Re: Top end troubles
Simon, I had a problem with my iron 350cc head and could not find an intentionally made oversize guide so I ended up buying a few standard items from various sources and selected the most appropriate to get the correct fit. There was only a few thou in it for me so if more you may need to get one made. Make sure the hole in the head is round and bore or hone it if necessary before measuring as mine was slightly oval.
I wondered why Ariel didn’t offer oversize guides when other makers had a range of sizes available, it seems to be a problem affecting Ariel alloy and to some extent iron heads.

If the guide is only a few thou loose then the simplest solution is to nickel plate a new guide. I did this on an iron head BSA way back when and the guides stayed put ever after.
I also remember my mate at work who simply knurled a guide and refitted it. Whether that worked for long I don't know.

Will it do any harm if I leave it for a while longer?
cheers
