Best tyres /help?

Post by Mharrisbarton »

I am just finishing the rebuild of a1954 swg/arm VH red hunter, and I would like an opinion from experienced riders as to the best modern tyres to fit, 3-25 front. 3-50 rear ×19inch.I have seen Michelin classic B19(54H)crossply.at a reasonable price £85-£90 ? each . I'm afraid my knowledge is from the 1970s and things may have moved on a little since then.I put service classic tyres on my 1929 model F they look ok.thanks for any help,Matthew Barton.

I've had Avon Road riders on a couple of bikes now, including my SQ4. I'm happy with them and they certainly make the bike feel a bit more stable.
cheers

Dunlop K 70 proved to be the best for me on the road

I have been using the Road Riders for a few years now, they work out cheaper than budget tyres as they last longer and the handling is good. Fronts last 7-9,000 (1200-1500 miles/mm) and rears 6-8000 (1100-1400 miles per mm). Miles per mm is essential info if planning a long trip, will the tyre last?

Another vote for Road Riders (Avon have been bought by Goodyear and manufacturing in the UK - which is where the motorcycle tyres have been made - is being moved to France. However I've just seen something from Goodyear that says they'll be continuing with the bike tyres, just hope the quality isn't affected by the move!)
But all the modern rubber is apparently much improved, even in the 'traditional' type tyres. A good friend is very happy with his new SM mk2/Speedmaster set up (on a 600 twin Ajay), so if you've given up ear-'oling maybe they're all OK these days!

Another vote for Avon Roadriders, have them on all three bikes and would be reluctant to move away from them

I can’t say anything about the rideability of Roadriders but I trust Avon does not make bad tyres at all. However the looks of the Roadrunner is another point! In my opinion they look far to modern on a classic bike. Overhere in Holland there are quite some Ariel riders who drive on Heidenau K34 tyres, and cover realy serious numbers of km’s/miles in wet and dry conditions with no complaints at all. The Heidenau K34 tyre does fit the classic looks of a Brit Bike in my opinion…

Heidenau have a vast array of tyres and I have used Mitas as well. Dunlop K70 s are OK if they aren't left on too long They look right and are good in the wet and dry . I'm going to a bigger crossection on the back and using slightly less pressure for comfort. even up to using a WM3 rim. Nev

I haven't tried the Avon Roadriders tires yet, but I still can't pass up the Dunlop K 70. It's a great tire with excellent handling and a nice tread pattern.
