yes, it's definitely him. And the photos were planned, It won't be just a coincidence. Good observation.Simon.Gardiner wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2023 1:36 pm Interesting photos - as always!
The first one in Karol's set above (happy chap on cammy four) is remarkably similar to the image used on page 2 of the 1932 sales catalogue.

Re: vintage photos of Ariel for pleasure
Looking again at the cammy four photo and also the image in the sales brochure, the bike in the photo has no registration number, in the sales brochure image it's been given one( the brochure image has also been retouched to remove the shadow underneath of something holding the bike up and to make the road surface look less like a gravelly yard!)
The brickwork behind, in the photo isn't unlike what's in some earlier pics of factory buildings, so I wonder if the photo is of a brand-new machine, specially taken at the factory, maybe with a member of staff in the saddle.

I think the poor Nr 84 (1932 VH?) suffers from a broken rear stand return spring! He could have ordered one from Karol

Re: vintage photos of Ariel for pleasure
UK registration numbers - I think I can see two 'OJ' - Birmingham, a WE - Sheffield, and an HE - Sheffield/Barnsley.
Rather a lot of national symbols about though - Union Jack badge on the coat pocket of the bloke standing behind no. 82 and a Union Jack flag under the handlebars of no. 86, just behind him. No. 96 has a flag with a shamrock on his handlebars, and is that another shamrock showing on the guy by the telegraph pole, just above the plate for no. 92? Also no. 88 clearly doesn't have a UK reg plate - someone will know where that style of number comes from.
No. 84 looks to have a small headlight, right behind the front reg plate. He's also got some serious boxes (inner tubes?) strapped to the back mudguard. From his expression I'd reckon he's much too competitive to have overlooked a broken stand spring, more like he's just dragged the bike forward off the stand from a sitting position and now he's concentrating hard on his route to the first checkpoint...
Excellent picture - just waiting for Roger or Vincent to tell us exactly when and where it was!

Re: vintage photos of Ariel for pleasure
I once managed to buy a tricycle based on an Ariel from 1930, and two weeks later the owner also sent this old photo. I was very pleased, even if I don't know if it's my Ariel, it's a nice story

Re: vintage photos of Ariel for pleasure
I have another interesting photo for you. This time it is an Ariel 500 model E from 1928 modified for a different type of fuel (in our country it was called wood gas), people are picky, this way you could drive on wood shavings when there was a lack of fuel.

Re: vintage photos of Ariel for pleasure
I wonder if anyone can determine where these photos come from. both have quite a large group of people with Aerials and it appears to be an organized club event.
