Still a few things to do on the frame.

The bracket on the frame that the brake pedal attaches to looks as though the chain has been eating into it, want to weld that up but also try and retain the seam from when it was manufactured.

Another welding job needs to be done on the cross brace in between the two mounts that I believe hold the regulator (please correct me if I’m wrong). I thought initially it might have been from tyre contact but the mud guard would have been there, possibly from the guard?. What ever it was it’s taken a fair chunk out to the point there is a hole developing.

And the last two, the rear left side mud guard support is badly flogged out and something has worn into the mount directly above. Now I’m assuming these are cast so not as easy to weld..or am I missing something?
Was thinking with the flogged out hole to drill it out round, countersink either side and then weld in a short stub of round bar. Clean it, drill and re-tap to the original size and nobody would know…anyone have a better idea?
Wear mark in the top is an easy one.

If I remember rightly that little hole in the 'cross brace' is there from the factory (pretty certain my '51 plunger frame had one).
Can you maybe do bronze welding/brazing for an insert on that rear fork lug?

You can use Nickel bronze to fill the hole and damage and then drill and re tap it. It's stronger than the steel and doesn't run away like silver brazing does. Nev

So I picked up an original oil tank today, bit of surface rust inside but thought it would clean up ok. Got it home and commenced cleaning it and a few holes have appeared. I’ve cleaned a lot of crap out from the inside but want to get it spotless and try to identify any more holes or issues I might have with it, I’m hoping that it can be re-used.


Oil tank as i purchased it, cost me $50aud

One of the three holes I’ve found so far, one on each side and one on the back a few mm up from the bottom.

I’ve now got it soaking in a tub of white vinegar to try and remove the left over rust. Once I’ve completed the vinegar treatment I hope to be able to thoroughly flush the insides of the tank along with the oil lines, braze up the holes and that hopefully it should be good to re-use.

What are people’s thoughts on this, the way I see it is as long as it’s been cleaned out thoroughly and that it doesn’t leak it should be ok to use..am I missing something?

Have also picked up an Amal 276 carb which I’m about to strip down and throw in the ultrasonic cleaner, I then need to school myself on Amal’s as I’ve not had anything to do with them in the past.

Hi Josh, a little late but here are some photos of an oil tank from my 1950 NH project that could be the same as you need and look similar to your photos. As you can see, mine is a work in progress as well!

Josh, maybe it's the picture but I think you will need another float chamber with a small angle to get it vertical as the inlet on the cylinderhead has an angle.

Cheers for the pics, how’s yours coming along. I’ve got the two issues..internal rust and then the three holes (So far). The holes I’m not concerned about to be honest, they can be patched. The rust however worries me, how have you gone about cleaning yours internally, have you found any holes?

If the vinegar doesn’t work as well as I hope I’m going to try electrolysis.
