Hi All,
I'm on the final stages of restoring our 1934 red hunter after being in pieces in the garage for 40 years.
We have an oil leak coming from inbetween the rear chain case and the gearbox main shaft.
Initially we thought it was the outer case but looks like its the rear.
Should it run with grease instead of oil like some BSAs?
Any ideas what's going on?

Run the gearbox with semi fluid grease - many of us use Morris K400EP here in the UK.
How much oil did you put in the chaincase? Fill it to the level plug and it will leak from the mainshaft hole, so just fill it until the chain dips in the oil and no more.

If you are worried about the chain and cush drive, spray some good chain oil at the engine shaft when the motor is idling.till you see it flinging.
For t he gearbox I'd fit the new type seal kit and a heavy gear oil with a bit of grease mixed with it. Maybe add a bit of Moreys...Nev

At the rear end of the chaincase, further back than the clutch dome should be 2 screws. The upper one should be the same as all the other screws but the lower one should have a spring on it and the inner end should be tapered. This is the metered oil supply to the rear chain. There is a corresponding hole in the back half of the primary chaincase and you need the tapered screw to be sufficiently far into the hole to let out a drop or two per minute.
On the photo below you can see what I mean but on this bike, the tapered screw is completely missing, hence the oil running down the outside of the case.
