The main sales pitch is that Ariel offers the cheapest 550 motorcycle. I would have thought that imported bikes would have been more expensive than those built in Germany; but I don't know what other 550cc sv bikes were sold at the time.

Volker,
I am not sure if the slogan "the cheapest 550cc" bike is not to be regarded as a pure marketing aproach. Please see the list of bikes available in Germany in 1930. The cheapest 550 Ariel then (Mod A) was listed for 1350 Marks. There were some bike of german production below that level!

Hi Gerhard,

Thanks for the price list. This is really interesting. The Ariels may well have been the cheapest 550 available - because there were hardly any other 550cc models. The only one I spotted are the sv Triumphs, which are slightly more expensive. An NSU 501T was much cheaper. Incidentally, a model A was 1475 Reichsmark in 1927 and then 1350 RM in 1930, according to the price list. But prices in 1930 will have been affected by the Wall Street crash of 1929.
