An Ariel matter
For a while ( a couple of years ) I have been toying with an idea to 'do' something with the image pictured below :
Most of you will know what this was.
But for those who dont, this Ariel head was in the entrance of the Ariel works offices at (I think) Dale road.
It looks like an Linoleum tiled floor with also an Linoleum inlay depicting the famous Ariel logo.
This picture is to be found on Jerry Mortimer's website: http://www.arielcycles.me.uk/factories.htm
I contacted a few club members for finding out more about this tiled floor....
and to my utter amazement this very piece of club history still exsist ! including an stout part from the concrete floor it was glued on
It had been 'relocated' many years ago in to a members shed !
How this story goes I will write about in a short story for a upcoming Cheval de Fer .
I contacted Herman Noort to give arms and legs to the idea. (older members might remember the 1994 april fools yoke Herman and me had with the fake Ariel Vtwin .... )
Fast Forward, a tiny bit older and perhaps more serious ...
From Vtwins to door mat... I wondered if it would be possible to get a door mat made as hommage too the tiled floor Ariel head.
Nowadays several printing companys can make any design in whatever material you want, including door mats.
I have taken the liberty to enhance the floor design by adding the immortal wording :
The Modern Motorcycle
Ofcourse, as befits an Artist ( noblesse oblige ) I did not do it myself, I only had the idea and Herman did all the hard work !
below a screen test picture showing how it will look :
The size will be 105cm x 80cm and about 7mm thick with a black soft plastic edge.
Dont expect it to be a cheapy, something for the uber dedicated Ariel aficionado ?
My plan is that the design stays with the door mat printing company ready for those who want to order one.
I dont want to be in between.
The final arrangments are now done to get the first 2 mats produced (for Herman and me ofcourse!)
Watch this space for more !
by the way, the title 'An Ariel matter' was coined by Dave Pitt, Thanks Dave !

My driveway can get a bit scruffy and oily whilst working on my bike, my Wife would love to wipe her feet on this mat

Brilliant idea I had thought of tiling my driveway with a similar design but 'never got roundtoit'.

Re: An Ariel matter
One for me please. It will go nicely with my Huntsman weathercock.
I'm surprised at Steve Carter wanting one for the drive. I would have thought he would make a carrying device so that he could unroll it and place it under his bike at the destination!

Re: An Ariel matter
Thanks for all the positive replys !
The size is going to be upped to 85 x 115cm (instead of 80x105) as it turned out that larger was a 'standard' size.
Also the thickness will be changed to 5mm instead of 7mm.
The 'haires' on the mat are dyed all the way down so the colors dont wear off but it wears down.
Standard size and thinner mat reduce the price which is not confirmed yet so watch this space !
