BRAKE ANCHOR PLATE

Post by PaulWoolley »

Good afternoon
I have a triangular brake anchor plate to the the front wheel but can't seem to find any details of how its fixed to the forks.
I would be grateful if someone give us a clue please. My bike is 1964 Leader.
cheers
Paul

This later brake anchor arrangement doesn't seem to be documented by Ariel
so I'll have a go . . .

The brake anchor is secured to the brake plate with two nuts and, when correctly
assembled with the wheel in the front forks, the brake anchor should be above
the brake plate. It is possible to assemble this with the brake anchor pointing
backwards but this is not correct. Also the brake plate should be free to move on
its pivot.

At the top the brake anchor is bolted to a bar which has a spherical nylon ball
in both ends. The bolt is a special item and sandwiches the nylon ball between
two shaped washers which also act as dust excluders. This bolt should be done
up tight when the bar should still rotate on the nylon ball.

The same arrangement of bolt and washers secures the other end of the bar to
the anchor point on the right fork leg about half-way up. The triangular brake
anchor isn't used with the earlier forks which have the brake anchor at the
bottom. underneath the suspension arms.

I've got some photos somewhere which I'll post whenI find them but this
may well be into the weekend.

The nylon bearings fir into the link arm via the cut-away. Push the bearing
until is fully in - there will be a satisfying little click when it's in place. It
doesn't matter which way the bearing goes in.
Inserting the bearing

When properly in place it can be rotated into position.

The anchor bar should only fit onto the brake plate in one way with
the flange against the plate. The link is cranked at one end to clear
the fork leg. This cranked end goes towards the fork leg and the link
fits to the anchor bar on the outside of the bar, away from the flange.
Assembly of link and anchor bar

I've shown the special bolts inserted from the link side but I've also seen
them assembled the other way round. The way I've shown it there is no
chance of the bolt coming out into the spokes but . . .

I hope this of help. If I've omitted anything please ask.
