Timing pinion to gear cam, meshing OK? W/NG

Having got the gear case off, I am not happy with the way these 2 gears are meshing.
It hasn't ever jumped, but there again, I have only ever started it in the garage.
Any thoughts welcome - If it doesn't look right, which gear is at fault?

Your crankshaft pinion does look a bit odd, but it might be just the lighting.

I think it could be an optical illusion. Having zoomed in again, the teeth on the gear cam have a black line around the edge. This together with the gap on the top of the pinion teeth is throwing my off noticing that the gear cam tooth descends below the black line and completely engages with the pinion teeth.
So, I think it is ok - hurrah!

I think so too. At any rate, camshaft pinion meshing is not a common Ariel problem that I've come across.

The rounding on the edges of the teeth give an illusion it's not meshing deep enough. It's normal.. Nev

they look ok to me if the teeth was a tight a fitting they would bind up when running at speed

So far, I have never heard of singles timing gear teeth jumping but I suppose there is a first time for everything. Wear on the sides of the teeth does occur and is easily solved by turning both timing pinion and the gear on the camshaft round so that they use the unworn face of the teeth. If doing this, mark the teeth before you turn the gears round. Talking of the gear on the camshaft I notice a lack of holes through it. Does this indicate that you are running the sporty A6/664 camshaft rather than the original F cam? It is a common and worthwhile modification to a W/NG.

I don't know Paul. It is a new bike to me. The camshaft does have an 'F' stamped on it though which is visible in the picture.
Is there any way to tell if its a A6/664?

Back to back. It has certainly given my bike a lot more grunt. The extra duration is plain to see.

Interesting picture Simes.
My A6/664 has a camwheel with holes and neither of the two F cams I found
holes. Both F cams have F stamped on the camwheel, one having F stamped
on the side of outer cam too. The A6/664 has that stamped on the side of the
outer cam.
Below is another view of the differences - the A6/664 is the silvery cam.
To the limits of my technology both A6/664 and F cams have the same base circle
and lift.
