Hi Simes, Here's 2 pics of Kickstart area minus the spring and its cover. Hope these help?

Looking at the Sturmey Archer Gearbox book for 1929 the KS parts page shows 4 different shafts of differing lengths, looks like you have the long one for some reason, maybe LS-11M with 2" extension but yours looks longer than that. The Ariel parts book for 1930 lists the Ariel SA box as having the 1 3/8" extended shaft so I assume that is what you should have.

That's the answer John. I'm toying with the idea of making mine shorter (a mini-lathe is a useful tool), but I'm wary of modifying what might be a rare part - or messing it up completely.
cheers

I believe that Brough Superiors used SA boxes, maybe the longer shaft was needed to allow for the width of the engine and thats what you have. Must put quiet a strain on the gearbox cover though.
On another note, I am looking for a top battery strap like the one shown in your picture, you wouldn't have a spare one kicking around by any chance?
Cheers John

Re: Sturmey Archer Kickstart spring for VB31
Hi Simes, Thanks for the pictures. I was hoping to find a patinaed one as the home made one on there at the moment looks awful I think.
I'll put up a request in the wanted section of the forum and if no luck then I'll have to adapt what's there to look better. 1931 Ariel VB31, 1935 Triumph 5/3 project, 1946 Ariel Square 4, 1952 Norton Model 7, 1953 BSA A10 Super Flash, 1954 Ariel VH

Just a thought but surely other manufacturers used something similar. The same battery was used by many,From memory Panther had something that looked the same,or you could make one from some old rusty steel,if thats the look you want.

Hi Andy, yes Panther did use something similar. I have one on my 37 M100 though it just has a flat bracket with holes in rather than the barrel trunnion ends that Ariel used. They are available through the club though shinny in SS.
