Tin chaincase gasket material

Post by Adz.F »

Hi,

Could anyone assist with what gasket material a 45 tin chaincase would be made of please? When I dismantled the inner clutch cover from the outer case there was quite a thick gasket material but I couldn't really tell what it was.

I have tried using 4mm cork to emulate the original but it is too brittle and when I punch the holes for the attachment screws it just splits.

I'm guessing due to the lack of this type of case suppliers aren't too worried about making them.

Any experience on material type and thickness greatly appreciated please.

Many thanks

Adam

The original was in cork but you will need a close grain cork sheet as the usual stuff sold for floor tiles etc will be too course to make small holes in. It is possible to buy sheet cork, model railway shops sell it for use as track underlay, though probably a bit thin. Alternatively run the case dry and use chain spray on the chain and grease on the shock absorber, perfectly fine for low mileage use.

Thank you both for the response!

I will give Russell motors a call when they open tomorrow, failing that will take a look in the local hobby store to see what I can get cork wise.

I would like to try and seal it if I can, although will see about perhaps running without oil but i worry about wear to the cam!

Many thanks

Adam
What cork are you using?
I've bought several types of gasket material from several sources (autojumbles, maybe bearing suppliers or other specialists) but for an overview of what's probably fairly commonly available look here (I tried Drags first but couldn't find anything!)
