Thirties Red Hunter Tyre choices

Post by huw.parsons »

Hello all

I'm wondering what the group's thoughts are on modern tyre choices for a mid thirties Hunter.
As I move towards getting the bike on the road it's time to order a pair.

I used a 20" ribbed Avon front and Dunlop K70 rear on my old '38 Hunter which seemed OK ten years ago.

Has anyone tried the soft compound Avons for fast road use?
Is there a better matched rear than the Dunlop K70? perhaps the K100 tt?

I wonder what you racing members use on rigid girder bikes.
Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

I reckon the K70 is fine. Ive run it on a Scott too and felt confident on it with the bike right over to the pegs on a track day. I'm no ace rider but the tyre's good. User them on my W/NG too enthusisticly and no probs. Like teddy bears porridge. Not too hard, not too soft. Nev

I use exactly what you are using now and have been very happy with the results.

Thanks Guys

It just strikes me as odd that Avon don't make a really good rear to go with the speed master

I'll order a K70 and a soft avon front today

Cheers

Doesn't your Hunter have a 20" front wheel. Mine does and that severely limits your choice . There doesn't seem much point going to a sticky rear tyre if you cant get one for the front . I got a Mitas rear to go with an Avon ribbed front.

Hi Ian
The Avon speed master front is available in 19, 20 and 21" in both 'normal' and 'sticky' race compound. I have a 20" front wheel on my Hunter and was wondering what rear tyre people generally use. It strikes me as odd that Avon do a sticky race front but no rear to go with it as far as I am aware.
I use Mitas on my '30 bike and have found them pretty good.

Cheers
