Partially stripped rocker inspection cap threads

Post by Graham.Goral »

Hi all,

The outermost threads on one of my tappet inspection holes (single cylinder OHV engine) are stripped so the only way to get any retention is to leave out the fibre washer to let the cap sit deeper and just seal with silicone but this always ends up leaking after a few months. Has anyone else found a solution - like do some caps have more thread than others?

Cheers
Graham

There is not much metal there and the thread is quit coarse. The best solution is a new rocker cover (perhaps a S/H one) I don't know how available they are but there must be some around. You could weld it and rethread it but that is not a simple fix.. Nev

Peter Kemp (single spares) had some s/h rockerboxes.
He also has some "oversize" caps.

Hi Graham,
I bought a new cap from DraganFly a couple of years ago and it had a longer threaded portion than the one I was replacing. The following link (which you may need to copy in a new browser window if it doesn't work) shows an image of their caps:-

They could be worth a ring if Peter Kemp is out of stock or can't help you.
All the very best,
Keith Mettam.
