rear spindle - something might not be right
Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
They would be around 37mm or 1.45 ish inches if the same as my front hub.
Obviously first dibs to Steve if they fitted his, but if you had more than 2 available I would certainly be interested too!
Regards
Adam

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
Thanks for the offer of the grease caps Paul, but I don't need them as they are already fitted - over to you Adam.
The saga however, for the rear spindle continues.
I made some abutment washers today, fitted them, reassembled and it was immediately obvious that they are not needed, because the grease caps no longer had anywhere for the caps to slide into! I tried offering it up to the frame, and there was now way it would all fit between the rear forks.
I am wondering if the bearings/sleeve have modified to account for thickness of the abutment washer. I notice on Drags site they take bearings made by Dunlop, then have an engineering company modify the sleeve. Its not inconceivable that a previous owner did something similar and allowed for the abutment washer in the length of the sleeve.
The dimension measuring across the flats of the bearing/sleeve I have is 1.889". If someone has one out, could they measure theirs please and let me know.
Many Thanks
Steve

I wonder if the wheel you have is the correct wheel. I can't see
enough in the pictures you've already posted.
Can you post some general pictures of your wheel please?

Here you go Will, the sprocket has 42t.
What do you think?

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
Steve, different from mine for sure, mine is fully cast, yours appears to be welded where it meets the outer spoke rim, perhaps an earlier model? It does look of the same design though, same spoke slots on the smaller side and overall similar layout. I cannot help with what year this hub is from, I have taken pictures with measurements of my bearing, adapter sleeve and spindle for ref though.
I am sure you will be able to get it working if the width of the wheel is the same as the rear fork width!

See below, it was the only steel rule I could find at the time so apologies in advance!

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
So your sleeve looks to be about 0.850”, not far from my 0.889, approx 0.040” different. Sorry I stated my sleeve dimension wrongly in earlier post, by +1”.
I think we must have the same bearings and sleeve - hmm

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
Yes the only part that will effect it will be the flange thickness, not the overall length though!

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
The wheel looks right to me - sort of. I can't say what looks wrong though which
is not very helpful.
Are your wheel bearings mounted on sleeves on the wheel spindle? None of
mine are.
All of the half-sided Ariel wheels both front and rear I've seen have all been made
up with a steel sleeve for the bearings pressed into the cast brake drum and none
of them have been welded or brazed. I've pressed several apart to replace badly
worn drums on the trials bikes.

Re: rear spindle - something might not be right
I am now wondering if the wheel is from an earlier bike. Today, I was rebuilding the brake rod assembly, changing the rod to straight from one with a kink. Having done that, the new brake rod doesn’t line up with the trunnion on the brake lever. So I found on Drags a brake lever for a 1944 bike which has a different set than the one fitted, but I am now thinking that perhaps what was fitted was correct.
Maybe this is a clue ?
I have a friend who has most of the parts lists and he is going to check through them to try and identify what I have.
