VH Piston 1956
VH Piston 1956
Good morning all,
Following the destruction of a valve seat...I have to rebore my cylinder and find a new piston.
My surprise: I have an 83.5 piston and I need to find an 84.
Normally a VH is in 81.8, can you give me an explanation!
Thanks

I don't recognise the size: BSA Gold Star is 85mm and Vincent twin is 84mm.
Your piston looks to be very worn and the top ring at least is blowing by badly.
A rebore was about due anyway.

In your opinion: is an ARIEL piston or other?

Phil
It looks very much like an Ariel piston - could be +060 inches, which gets close to your size and would be the biggest standard oversize.
If you clean the top carefully you might find the oversize stamped on it.
Also, what letters and/or numbers are inside it?

Here is the top of the piston: dimension 83.4.
no indications inside....!
The pieces of the seat have damaged it well

Re: VH Piston 1956
I don't think it is an original Ariel piston but it might be a replica of some kind. Of what kind I have no idea.

Re: VH Piston 1956
It's pretty thick but would have been OK at the original size. Not many pistons are 81.9. IF the pin size is standard for Ariel, I'd say it's an after market part. Nev

Re: VH Piston 1956
Looking through my stuff I've found one just like it It has a mark where a valve has touched the surface as there's no valve cutout machined.. After market .Maybe Italian? Same large machined relief under the Domed part. Nev
