The cause both of magnetos coming loose and of poor earthing between magneto and frame is painting of the engine plate, or even worse, powder coating of it. I never paint (or powder coat) the magneto platform, top or bottom, because loose magnetos were a common problem amongst those of us running Ariels as schoolboys in the early 1970s.
There is always enough oil about to prevent the engine plate from rusting if you leave the remains of the old paint on it round the edge.

hi i am going to find or make allen key bolts to fit my mag so i can use a long allen key and a extincion bar to go under the engine to do up the mag i find you can not get a socket on properly on all the bolts but a ball ended allen key will

Johnny, I did that when I reassembled my magneto.

Cap heads fitted to the mag, cut a long allen key and turnd a ball end in the lathe.

Used this with a 3/8" drive socket and extension piece.

HI Julian that is what i am thinking i have already got a set of long ball end 3/8 drive sockets, Great minds think a like :D
