Brake plate lock nut W/NG

Post by Dave.cornett »

Hi, I have a W/NG which has always had, let's say, dodgy front brakes. I know they are not renowned for great front brakes but it should be better than it is so I thought it was about time I did something about it.
I took off the front wheel but can I remove the brake plate lock nut.......in a word no...!
Is there a technique for removing it or am I doing something wrong ?
Cheers Dave.

Do you mean the one on the axle or the stay? Nev

Re: Brake plate lock nut W/NG

I just picked up a NOS front axle at the annual rally this weekend.
Took some pictures of other WNG's front endy bits.

Doesn't appear to be anything special. It's a bar with threads at each end and nuts on them.

It should just push through the wheel, if the nuts on the non-brake side are removed ?
Alternatively, the old "two nuts locked together" trick, on the non-brake side, should allow some leverage on the stuck one ?

Or remove the axle with plate and using soft jaws in the vice hold it and take the nut off. Nev

Nut now off, vice and freeze and release worked. Now I know why the brakes are dodgy , nearly down to the rivets plus a fair amount of grease from the speedo drive doesn't help.
Thanks for the advice.

After looking at brake shoes , I thought these look quite modern for a 70 year old bike......turns out they are not the correct shoes. Don't suppose anyone out there has a pair of front brake shoes to fit a W/NG ? I have a brand new set of liners. Still going to see if I can get hold of a set of liners for these shoes but maybe hit and miss as I don't know what bike they are from. They have a set of numbers stamped into the shoe. HED then C1715
Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Cheers Dave.

The original W/NG shoes are steel. Very late ones (well post war) use a triumph wheel and have cast alloy shoes. Nev
