Having been building V Twin motorcycle engines for over 50 years this is the first Square 4 engine/restoration project.I read alot about broken rings, screwdrivers and picks poking rings in place etc.Must be a better way since I prefer to work alone to keep distractions from showing up.As seen in the first picture these are dimensions taken from the top of block with standard bore.First step
1) Fashion spacer blocks 8 inches in length as pictured. The triangle shaped wide blocks are because a block at full width wont fit between base studs. Also pictured is a small long bolt ( or dowel rod ) drilled perpendicular and in the center through both pieces to keep desired dimension from moving.Be sure rod is long enough to be able to remove it after block is in place.
2) Lay wide spacer, bolt to front and narrow block 90 degrees across .Position piston bottoms of skirt to bottom of wide spacer,by hand register all piston surfaces against spacers.Clamp as shown and slide narrow block from away.
3) Space ring gaps, oil ,ring compressors etc
4) Set block in place and it will almost install itself from its weight.First attempt and done.
5) Remove rod , triangles etc.
