1958 Ariel FH HCS engine
On the drive side to the rear the engine has a mauled brass stump with an internal thread and an oil line pipe olive female shape projecting from the crankcase.which appears to be a breather pipe. Should this stump unscrew? Do I dill it out?
It is obviously beyond use but I cannot see any reference to it apart from an "oil line type" pipe which fixes onto it. Part 10390-54.

ih i think it screws out , but your one looks like someone has had a go at trying to get it out , you can try and heating up the casing and use a pair of small stilsons, to undo it , or braise a nut or bolt on it and tuy and undo it if not you will have to drill it out and re tap it

mmmm never noticed before but there does not appear to be a number for the breather union listed anywhere. The 1956 parts book lists a fibre washer for it but not the union.
It is the crankcase breather and heating the case may well help as the ally will expand a little more than the brass but not by much, however it may well break the bond between the 2. I wonder if it cast in? Unlikely, I think but a long time since I played with a Huntmaster.

That would be either 1/4" or 3/8" BSP.

If it was intended to be screwed out it would have a hex on it. It may well be cast in with a ball valve there originally,, Nev

Looks to me to be screwed rather than cast as the case has been machined flat where a nut would squarely mate to it?

That "spot facing"could still have been done to get a definite dimension. I reckon there's been a ball valve in there. Glass without a spring? Nev

hi it maybe a taper fitting that someone has fitted or a bulkhead fitting that you use a nut on each side of the fitting that has been screwed in with some loctite but i do know the original one screws in

And sorry, Nev, there's no valves in 'em as such - but internally it come across from the timing side where there's a disc that times the venting through it.
