Magneto pick-up!
Magneto pick-up!
Hi - the cable nut for my magnets pickup (Lucas Magneto Mo1 ´4) split in half, so I got a replacement part, the 463066 compleat setup. the cable nut (acorn nut) was different, but I figured it was pretty much the same. How ever, It is not, there is a difference, and I cant get it to stick good enough. I wonder if 1) Am I just doing it wrong, or 2) is there a different magneto pickup that I need to get. My original fitted one had a flat cable nut (see link, item no 95) https://www.magneto.co.uk/acatalog/Onli ... O1L_7.html

Hi Will, looks like the right one to me. Have you replaced the whole pickup? This is probably the best thing to do.
To get you going, if you just want to replace the nut, and it is a bit loose, maybe some plumbers thread tape would take this up. There are two types. Use the expensive one!
Does the kit come with the brass washer for the end of the cable?
The bikes I have with me (30's, 40's have the taller nut, but I doubt it matters.)

Hi Brenton, well I get a compleat set, with all the fittings, and even an extra nut. I tried all sorts of combinations. Most likly, I am just diong something wrong, but I get the feeling that the distande betvix the screws are not the same. The thing right now is that it feels like the whole starting problem is electrical, so maybe I am just having the wrong focus here on the pickup. I understand that they are rarely the problem!

Hi Will,
The photo on the website looks the same as the one I've just pulled off a maggy.
Centre to centre, the screws are 35mm apart.
The step is 3/4" - 22.2mm in diameter.
It could be yours is a repro one? It might need a little tinkering.

I must have made a mistake some how, I just looked at the part number, the 463066, but when I read the description on ebay it says it is suitable for K2F and K1F magneto. So my follow up question is there several parts with the same number, and you have to look for variations, or might the part number listed be wrong? Just want to know what kind of misstake I did here!
I am starting to suspect that I ought to have bought the Lucas part (Magneto pickup) no 458876 instead? So any thoguhts, for an Ariel W/NG from 1943, mith a Lucas Mo1 H3 magneto?????

Hi Will,
there's a useful web page here. http://www.theodole.nl/LUCAS%20MAGNETO.html
I don't think K2F's take the pickup you have been supplied. The only K2F pickups I've seen have long arms and clip on http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/new-PICKUP-L ... 1c25372ff3
If you bought it on ebay, you might want to contact the seller about that.
Your old pickup 463066 is the correct one for your W/NG MO1 Maggy and it also fits the N1 AJS.
I can see the difference, but can't tell you what the new pickup would suit. It may be the 458876, but I can't help you there.
Can you get enough bits out of it to make your old pickup work?
Brenton

Hi Brenton, thanks for the info. I managed to use a different acorn nut, get the coal and spring from the one pickup thatdid not fit, and put it all together in the old one! After gleaning it out, I got it to work, and I finaly got my bike started again still, it would be nice to get a good replacement pickup
