That's an interesting suggestion, Nev.
I don't think that I've seen a ball bearing with a loose outer raceway. The only ones I've used are 'fixed' outers, e.g. on an Enfield twin where there is a roller bearing on one end and a ball on the other.
The ball bearing serves the purpose of locating the crankshaft and then any movement due to expansion is accommodated in the roller bearing.
Given that the timing side bearing on a Square Four locates the crankshaft, I would be concerned that a ball bearing on the other end would prevent any movement necessary for expansion.
