Thank you all for the replies. I think i will chance it with the plus .040 nos pistons if he still has stock. The engine shop said the taper wasn't too bad when he measured the bore. He just said it was out of his usual tolerance, not pretty but within the ring manufacturers tolerance.
They are a great machine shop and he has many books dating back decades which he uses for reference. All my other engines have been easier to find pistons for so have gone with rebores so its a little different in this case.
It won't be worked hard anyway so I will take your advice and remove lip.
