Hi - thanks for the continued interest and help.
I think I’ve sussed it. The nut idea made it all work nicely, so the rod/washer/friction all works. Turned my attention to the knob - discovered a whole blockage in the depths of the thread preventing it from screwing down far enough (and I hadn’t wanted to force it once I felt the resistance really tighten.
Cleaned it all out with a 3/8 CEI tap - produced enough gunk to look like a sludge trap! - and hey presto it now ‘pulls’ the whole brass bar combo up nicely.
