Thanks guys,
I need to replace the chain, after trying the above it is still loose.
How Can I lock both sprockets when removing old chain so as to avoid retiming ?
Sorry to be a pain but looking for easiest way .

hi you can make something to go between the engine and mag sprockets to lock them or i would mark them with tippex from the sprockets to the timing case and then take the chain off if its got a split link if not you have to remove the mag sprocket and re time it and there was a post on the forum how to do it i did have it saved but it is now saying the forum has moved the post you can now find it in the how to do it guides on the forum

The Magdyno armature is easily forced out of alignment as it's quite a distance to the first ball race. I do my final timing with the camshaft sprocket and find it easier. You do have to remove the oil pump and it's best done with the oil tank empty. Nev

Even if you manage to lock the sprockets and remove the chain, a new chain will be less worn and so give slightly different timing when reassembled with the sprockets un-moved.
Timing a single is not too difficult if you know the tricks. I well remember my school mates having one hell of a job to set the timing because they didn't know the tricks. There are two things you need to do. One is to make sure that the magneto (or cam) nut goes smoothly and easily onto the thread using fingers only. Set the timing in the usual way with the magneto sprocket (or cam sprocket, if you insist Nev) just slightly loose. Tap the sprocket onto the taper using a suitable large socket outside the extractor threads. Then tighten up the magneto (or cam) nut which, because it it nice and free, will tighten the sprocket onto the taper without it slipping. Check the timing again and repeat if necessary.
