Removing the steering damper rod (and it’s pin)

Hello all.

Bottom yoke on my FH is full of gunk and grit. Thought I could avoid the challenge of clearing it out but the grit is also stuck in the threads at the top, stopping the yoke nut fully bedding down.

So - I’d like to take it out.

Question: how difficult is it to drill out the pin holding the damper rod in the yoke, down by the steering lock? Can it be done in situ without removing the yoke off the bike (again….!)

Any other tricks on how to get the damper rod out?

As usual, all help appreciated.

Martin

Hi Martin,
You have to remove the steering lock first and then drift the pin out. See this thread for removing the lock :-

Good luck with it,

Many thanks Keith. Off I go I search of the elusive grub.

Cheers.

Martin,
From memory, you drift the pin out by hitting your drift through the larger hole on the steering lock boss and punching the pin out towards the back of the motorcycle. It may take a couple of hard whacks to get the pin moving.

Hi Martin

I can confirm the pin drifts out, no need to complicate matters with a drill - match the punch size closely to the pin and be 'emphatic' ;)
