Re: FOR SALE : 1938 350cc
Hi.
Lovely looking bike.
I would love to hear what the forum cognoscenti think of this one.
New forum member trying to learn as not had an Ariel since I was 18 (Ansty NH 350) and hoping to pick another one up before I’m too old to ride it!
Have bought from Verralls before but there never ‘cheap’.
Cheers D

Re: FOR SALE : 1938 350cc
Welcome to the forum! It's very shiny, and almost all hard-to-find parts are there, although some not in the correct place like the horn. Some mistakes are easy to fix like the inverted brake arm at the front, the missing exhaust bracket in the seat area; others require some work like the missing or painted dust cover of the rear brake and the incorrect carb and float bowl. In-line petrol filters are often fitted when there is rust in the tank. It may be a good bike, but for that price I would expect that even the battery clamp is correct and that the tyre pump is not missing.

Huge thanks for welcome and that info.
I agree, top money should equal top bike. Funny how little details are often overlooked.
I’ve learnt enough from reading this forum to know that horn brackets and fork links are a HOT subject.
Have been chasing up the 46 NH advertised on this forum but so far with no reply from seller.
I’ll keeping looking and learning.
Cheers again. D

Re: FOR SALE : 1938 350cc
There are minor quibbles on this bike but it is one of the best I have seen.

Hi Paul.
I does look fantastic.
I’m struggling with the vastly different values/asking prices for what look like similar machines these days, especially girder bikes.
Will keep it on my ‘watch’ list.
Cheers D

Re: FOR SALE : 1938 350cc
Oh yes, a very nice looking 350 Ariel.
Minor quibbles so they may be, but....
That horn, o.k. I give in, I wont moan again about that front bracket being upside down as on this one it's not there ! haha
What I would not do is use that angled horn bracket as it now hangs from the seat pillar casting.
That can break because of the vibrating/levering weight of the Altette.
When it breaks (and it will one day) you plunge sideways
Douze points for the lower chainguard being present and the very correct heat shields.
but I doubt the primairy chaincase...'39 should have the 'streamlined' bulge .
Or maybe not, in any case, (pun intended) it's a easy swop over.
No check springs on the front fork ? maybe it's a '38 model.
Front brake rod should run inside the front mudguard stay, trunnion on brakeplate lever normally sits on the inside.
All minor things indeed...however, a 350 for almost 11K hmmmmm

Hi Vincent and double thanks for replying to both posts.
Fantastic info
Had never noticed the lower chain guard before, imagine it’s missing on many bikes.
Minor points it seems and I won’t mention horn brackets.
Will be looking at the 46 NH advertised on this forum early next week, I’ll go from there.
Big thanks for taking the time to help.
