Re: Hymn to the 1928 Model C
Long time....
For those of you who wondered what happened next,.... or perhaps no-one wondered at all
With pension looming around the corner, my attention switched to doing more trips together with my better half instead of me going about on my own on the Ariel.
Plan that got hatched was that a small trailer was needed but one with a rear entrance for the Ariel.
Two birds with one stone, take more luggage and have a bit more comfort
Like Steve but with just that tiny bit more leg room
The market for caravans in the Netherlands has a few rear door models available.
Most of them too heavy for our car and -not unimportant for a cloggie- at a price.
The prices -new- start at a very good post war SQ4 or prewar RH.
Buying an other car, a transporterbus, was ruled out.
Thats putting the cart before the horse. Ehhhhh, that's it !
So after getting really obnoxious from looking at the prices that rear door caravans demand and to act in line with my personal Noblesse Oblige,
or more precise; my frantic urge insisting to behave outside the usual box I came to this :
I've rebuild my old open trailer in to a MotorHome ! or just Sleurhut .
Rear doors a la Citroen HY and as usual (.....) things get out of hand and I drool to much over details.
The outside is now nearly finished the folding bed to be constructed.
Premiere will be at the German rally , Hals und Beinbruch .
Bought a second hand NOS horsetrailerhood, shortened and lowered it. Constructed a space frame from square tubing covered with Alu-Bond sheet.
Walls and floor isolated, fitted new torsion axle and tow bar with overrun brake.

Can you do it within 750 kg total? and 2 meters high for the payroads and ferry?
If you're going to Spain for the winter like us you need 2 bicycles aswell.

Hello Adrie, a.t.m. it's on 435Kg with the interior to go. and maybe solar panels on the roof.
Height is 200cm for the French Peage and indeed the ferry.
I will stay away from the Rouen tunnel
The bicycles go left and right to the Ariel.

Re: Hymn to the 1928 Model C
In a somewhat similar vein, during the evenings on the two-week, cross-U.S. Cannonball ride on my own 1928 Ariel Model C, I took photographs and made notes of the various useful features I saw in the support trailers for the other 100 or so machines. Although no single trailer had all of the features I thought would be useful for my purposes, all that I wanted could be incorporated in a 6 ft. × 12 ft. enclosed cargo trailer. The result was the following:Vincent.vanGinneke wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 10:24 amPlan that got hatched was that a small trailer was needed but one with a rear entrance for the Ariel.
However, unlike Vincent's trailer, my "philosophy" is that a trailer is for a motorcycle, a hotel room is for me…

Re: Hymn to the 1928 Model C
Two of my bikes do much the same job. Same performance, same weight, but different seat heights and I'm guessing the FH will be the better handling.
Which one do I keep? I only have room for three!
Trouble is, I'd like a Leader and a VH...
cheers

Re: Hymn to the 1928 Model C
Sort of ready now, only the seat pillows to get made.
Below, my project to end all projects :
Distracted ? Concentration problems ? Wanting to do many things but which one gets priority? Finish them all at the same moment ?
Yes, but I like it, it's the way I function I guess
( German crank, UK Wyatt cases, Godden heads, Australian clutch, US Megacycle cams and a few things more. )
But I did something tiny to my Model C ! finally painted the hubs in a way that was o.k.
last time I think I used a cloth that containing traces of silicone, made the paint bubble...
